Transcript Of This Masterclass Lecture:
“This may trigger you. And if it does, that is a good thing! It asks us to really look at our actions with conscious awareness of what we are doing and not just move through the world unaware…Or even sleepwalking. If it does trigger you, then you need to honestly ask yourself, ‘Why does this freaking trigger me so much?’ ‘Easy’ and acting do not marry. They divorce very quickly. Let’s put things into perspective…Think about how much time you are putting into a job that is not what your end goal is. Think about that.Think about how many hours you are putting into something that is not what, at the end of the day, you are passionate about doing. Who is getting your energy? What is getting your energy? Now, it is no secret, and more importantly, there is no shame whatsoever that we have to do things to support ourselves while we are in this crazy field of being an actor, right? We have to support ourselves…We have to make an income…A lot of times, the work that we do get to do as actors is here or there, and it doesn’t always fulfill giving us everything we need to make a full income. So we have that (those) ‘safety job(s)’. That (Those) necessary job(s). But if you really think about it, how much energy are you matching the energy that you’re putting into someone else’s business when you are doing those jobs? And then how much energy are you putting into your own business? Meaning you, the actor that wants to be an actor? Think about that. Your boss is getting ‘rich’ (in what they are intending to accomplish-whatever that may be for him or her) thanks to you. You’re working hard for your boss’ dreams. You’re working hard to make your boss’ dreams come true. Think about it. For example…You’re exhausting yourself so your boss can go on ‘vacation’…So your boss can ‘provide’ for his or her family…So your boss can buy ‘nice cars’… So your boss can ‘take lessons to learn something else’…So your boss can ‘buy a boat’…So your boss can invite family and friends over to his or her ‘beautiful house’…You’re doing that. And people like you are doing that. Now I am not saying that is your intention of working that job…Your intention is to take care of yourself and those you are responsible for taking care of…But, regardless of your intention, you are still working hard and that very energy is, without question, going into fulfilling your boss’ intention..His or her dreams. But what are you doing for yourself to make that happen for you? Meaning your dreams…Whatever they may be for you? How much energy are you putting into your dreams being realized? How much commitment are you putting into making yourself an actor? Every time you build and maintain certain structures for your ‘safety job’, you’re justifiably fulfilling that structure to succeed…Because that is why you are hired. Well as an actor, you have a structure that you need to build as a foundation to allow your business to stand strong and succeed…And to be able to weather the storms when they come. How many hours are you putting into being an actor? And if you’re not doing that, where do you think it’s going to happen from? Who’s going to do it for you? Do you think it’s just going to happen spontaneously? Do you think just your raw talent is enough to actually get and have a job that’s for the long run? You have to, first of all, do all you can to even be seen to even be considered for the job. And more importantly, you have to know what you are doing in regards to the craft and in the business. And you have to actively be the most important participant in that very pursuit of your own business! You have to be your hardest working employee and also the CEO! Yes, you may be lucky enough to get a job here or there, but as we all know, every single job an actor will get his fleeting. It will always end…And you will always have to find something else to sustain you. You always have to go on another audition…You always have to hope that another job…that next job…will come along. So who are you really taken care of right now? Yes, you’re taking care of yourself financially because you have to…it’s justifiable….it is necessary. But as an artist, who are you really taken care of? And you have to be really honest with yourself. How much am I really putting into being and doing what I want while I am here on this planet? You’re not promised tomorrow…Your promised right now…So if God forbid you’re not here tomorrow, have you been able to say to yourself…Can you honestly say to yourself…’I have given it my all to do what I feel like I’ve been brought here to do.’? Or, are you saying I work hard just to pay my bills…To play it safe…And so my boss can succeed in his or her dreams? Where are you in that? Where are you in that? Think about it.”
I hope you enjoy this masterclass lecture.
