Why Acting Is Not For The Faint Of Heart…

Transcript Of Video:

“No…

I don’t think acting is about pretending…

I think acting is about just the opposite of that…

I think acting asks of us…

To look at the human condition…

In a way that does not allow for a pretty little filter…

To be put upon what life really holds.

Life really holds a series of struggles…

A series of trials and tribulations…

And for many people…

A lot of suffering.

And I think as an actor we have to really look at that with a magnifying glass…

And then find that within us…

In order to reveal it.

And that’s not for the faint of heart…

That takes a lot of will…

That takes a lot of strength…

That takes a lot of courage…

And that takes a lot of self-introspection…

In order to find that within oneself…

And then have the strength…

And the bravery…

To actually reveal that…

Without filter…

In all its messiness…

In all its grit and glory…

And the beauty of that…

Is that when you have this type of art form…

It gives the possibility…

That someone witnessing that art form…

Will…

Or can be…

Changed.

That transformation can happen for another…

Individually…

And collectively.

To be able to have someone witness your experience…

Can actually validate your experience…

In that it allows you to know that…

You’re not alone going on this journey we call ‘Life’…

And the beauty of acting…

Is that’s what we’re doing all the time…

We’re telling stories of human beings…

Going through struggles…

Going through strife…

And then saying…

‘Hey Listen…

This is what WE go through…

And you’re not alone!’

And then the hope of that is…

Somehow by witnessing that from an audience approach/perspective…

Some kind of healing will happen…

Or at least an awakening…

So acting…

Not only becomes this amazing beautiful art form…

But it also becomes this amazing beautiful service…

To humanity…

And mankind as a whole.”

Making $#!+ Happen!

810b3d06-f577-4e5f-9458-a1f3d3cf4ac2

If you are not willing to do the work…

Guess what?

There is someone out there who most certainly is.

As harsh as that may seem, it is absolutely true!

And as artists, this is true x 1000%.

In an industry where there are countless artists pursuing creative paths, you better believe that you have to fully show up to the plate if you expect to break in and break through.

It is the difference between an idea and a dream.

It is the difference between a hobby and a career.

An idea and a hobby are great but there is no personal risk factor if it does not happen.

In other words, your insides are not going to be tied up in knots and you are not going to lose sleep if it does not happen for you.

It is very c’est la vie.

When we get into dreams and a career, it matters.

You better believe it matters!

You want it.

You yearn for it.

You eat, drink and sleep it.

And if it is not happening, it most likely hurts.

It can even break your heart in its absence!

It means something to you in ways that make no sense other than your soul simply craves it.

But having dreams can only take you as far as you are willing to put in the work to make those dreams materialize.

Otherwise, they are just sitting there playing around in some imaginative part of your brain pressing upon that button that makes you hope and wish for that special something that it is going to magically make those dreams actualize before your very eyes.

But it does not work that way!

The common denominator with those fulfilling their dreams is that they work their asses off to make it happen.

When I think of all my students and clients out there that are having great successes, I can tell you first hand how much work and sacrifice they have put into the work they so profoundly love.

And once they are actually doing the work they love, they are working their asses off to make sure that the quality of work they are putting out there is congruent with all the work they did to actually make it all happen.

You have to do the work to make it happen!

And let’s be honest…

There are no days off if nothing is happening.

Even if it is one small thing everyday towards your goals…

Do it!

Do not wait until tomorrow!

Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Many small things add up miraculously to become huge breakthroughs.

Sometimes this means making healthy and productive sacrifices along the way to make your dreams happen.

But no one is going to do the work for you.

These are your dreams and you have to be accountable for putting in all the necessary components…

And that includes the work.

If you want to experience a reality that allows you to do what you always dreamt of doing, you have to make it not just a dream.

You need to get yourself together and start getting in there and getting your hands dirty making the path to the destination.

First, you need the passion.

That passion is the thing that drives you forward no matter how many obstacles appear along the way.

And the majority of the time, there will be obstacles.

But it is that passion that keeps your eye on the prize and reminds you of the intention of what you are going after.

And that passion is necessary because it reiterates that whatever you are going after is alive and burning beautifully in your soul.

It is that passion that allows you to meet those obstacles eye to eye, learning from them, and then using them towards your goal.

Next, you need a fire in your belly that excites you and uses your creative resources to actually start creating.

That very fire gets things out of your head and into tangible reality.

It is that fire that allows you to experiment, to fall down, to make mistakes, and to learn what is useful and what is not along the path to making it all happen.

Then there is inspiration.

You need to be inspired to keep those creative juices flowing in your Spirit to want to continue to artistically explore and implement action towards your goals.

And if you are lacking inspiration…

Go seek it out!

Open your eyes…

And your ears…

And your heart!

Walk outside and just witness the splendor in everything around you.

There is a story in everything.

And this includes things you may have thought are just meaningless objects.

Allow Life to feed your soul so you can feed your creative path.

And then there is the discipline.

You need some kind of personal discipline to hold youself accountable for not allowing the momentum of what you are going after to slip through the cracks.

That discipline is a practice, just like any other practice, that keeps you productive and moving forward.

It keeps you learning.

It keeps you growing.

It keeps you trying.

It keeps your experimenting.

It keeps you expanding.

It keeps you active.

And it keeps you productive.

Finally, and most importantly, the work has to be fun.

The second you allow the fun to dissolve…

The second the enjoyment goes out the window…

It is no longer a dream…

It becomes a burden.

And that burden dampens the passion…

It smothers the fire…

It turns out the lights on inspiration.

And it turns productive discipline into a boring and unwilling obligation.

And then all is lost.

Keep it fun and remind yourself of why you chose your creative path to begin with.

So with all that said…

What are you waiting for?

Hold yourself accountable for the realization of your dreams.

Be the one that goes to work for you because you want it and you know it is possible.

Be the CEO of your own Life and continue to grow, learn, expand and evolve.

And if you are becoming aware that any of the above components are missing, you gotta change things up so you can make $#!+ happen!

You have to be your own grand manifester.

By the nature of who we are as artists, we are already creative beings which means we already have that manifestation gene within us.

We have to utilize it if we expect$#!+ to happen.

Be the one that makes it happen for you and then experience the bliss of our dreams as your reality!

Your Fight Song

There is a question that comes up time and time again.

“Why do we talk and explore so much about suffering in the work?”

It is a great question and one that deserves an explanation that makes sense and can actually be applied to our process.

To not answer this question does the actor, the artist, the human being a great disservice.

And in my opinion, not addressing this question misleads the actor or any artist as to what he or she needs to do and viscerally understand in order to bring a profound level of truth to the work…

And actually, understand what the journey is all about.

To go a step further, it is a useful question for any human being to explore if there is a willingness.

This kind of questioning is not for the faint of heart as it asks us to look at people, places and experiences that cause discomfort.

This kind of questioning awakens us from our potential sleepwalking and allows us to have an awareness/higher consciousness of the human experience.

You see, we can want share and reveal peace and love through our work…

But you must understand that that objective is a result of the work.

That is an admirable and beautiful way of approaching any kind of art form.

But the truth of the matter is the real work is about understanding human beings striving and overcoming countless obstacles (at every moment actually)  in order to experience peace and love.

In my 41 years of being on this Earth, I have yet to meet a single human being that has not experienced suffering in one way or another.

And I have yet to come into contact with any human being that is not trying to improve his or her present situation or reality in one way or another.

It is one thing that we all have in common, besides biologically what we are made of, that cannot be contested.

And it sure as hell is the one thing that drives every single story that has ever been written.

Humans GO THROUGH A LOT…

And to deny that is to deny the truth of the human condition.

Even monks who meditate and are at “peace” are at “peace” because they work on it through meditation constantly with the attempt for the peace to not be disturbed so they can maintain their peace.

From the moment we are born we are brought into a series of sufferings and wants.

Think about it…

We go from the comfort of our mom’s womb where everything is done for us and we travel out of a birth canal into the complete uncertainty and unknown of Life.

Now, I do not remember for sure, but I can assume that that journey is not like a fun little slide at the kiddie park.

The closest thing I can imagine it being like is white water rafting down some pretty active body of water.

We come out of that safe space with our peace disturbed and now wanting…

Wanting air…

Wanting warmth…

Wanting to shield from this new thing called brightness…

Wanting food…

And at that moment I can imagine we probably want to go back to where we just came from.

But here we are…

And we cry as an action to somehow someway get some help…

To make things better.

Why do I use this as an example in class all the time?

Because it is a straightforward example that we are born into trials and tribulations and it will be part of our human journey until we go onto the next unknown.

(and we can only hope that that next journey will be at the very least, a bit easier)

We innately know from birth that we need to do some kind of action to achieve and experience some kind of improvement.

As you read this now, I am sure something comes to mind.

And if something does not, consider where that something may be resting or even hiding in your consciousness as the actual action to improve your present circumstances.

Some may make choices or take actions that are “healthy” to improve their circumstances.

And some may end up choosing other options that are considered “unhealthy” in an attempt to improve their circumstances.

But in both cases, any given human’s main objective to is somehow someway “make things better” through what they have and what they know up to that point in his or her life.

To improve their reality.

Some have had slight moments of hardship.

And then there are others that have experienced profound and often unmentionable trials and tribulations.

But we all do our best to overcome.

We all have our fight song that we discover through our experiences that take us moment to moment to try to transform our reality so we can indeed experience peace and love.

Even if it is just a little bit at a time.

So take the time to understand a character’s fight song that gets them through their journey.

And take the time, if you have yet to do so, to discover or become aware of your own fight song that gets you through your own difficult times.

What motivates you to keep going?

What encourages you to keep going?

What brings you solace so you can keep going?

What is your slogan to remind you to keep going?

What helps you when nothing else seems to, to keep going?

If you understand this in your Life, you will understand this in the work and it will not seem like some equation that puts you in your head.

It will drop you into your gut and free you beyond belief in the work.

Because it connects you to your own and to other’s humanity

Warning! Acting Actually Requires You Knowing What You’re Doing!

shutterstock_121160620

Last week I got a call from an actress that was referred to me by a long time student and private client.

I could tell the moment we started speaking that this is one of those actors that really really has respect for this art form.

I could hear in her voice she has that burning hunger that I personally love to witness that keeps the actor going deeper and deeper into the work.

It is quite clear that along with her remarkable talent, she has amazing instincts and intuition that have carried her very far in her career.

She has had a lot of success on a number of tv shows and is now being given the rare opportunity to bring her gifts to the stage in a city that is not very forgiving when it comes to standards.

She has signed all the contracts and in a few months she will play a very complicated and layered role in a new two and a half hour drama minus a much needed fifteen-minute intermission.

And yes, she has to do eight shows a week.

There will be no “Action!”

There will be no “Cut!”

And you guessed it…

There will be no editing to pick and choose the very best takes to bring the perfect performance together!

There will just be her, the ensemble, the set, the props, the lighting, the sound, the arc as laid out by the text that she will have to live without stopping two and a half hours a show, eight shows a week, and about two thousand people in the audience who paid about $150-$300 sitting there to watch her do it.

In short, there is nowhere to hide and no one/no thing to hide behind.

There is no stopping and starting over.

It is happening right now and the stakes are as high as they can possibly be!

That’s the beautiful danger of theater Life!

It is the actor’s true home requiring and even testing our technical accountability to make it through such a deliciously challenging process.

So you can imagine the panic in her voice as she shared:

“I just don’t know what I am doing! I can’t get there on my own! I take class. I have literally taken class all over the place. I mean I get these notes and sometimes I have no idea what they mean. And then within a lot of the class setups, I am scared to actually ask what these notes mean because I don’t want to ruffle anyone’s feathers. But shouldn’t they make sense if they are being given to an actor? Shouldn’t I know what I am doing by now? And then I feel like it is up to luck if things go well in the space or not. Sometimes I am in it and sometimes I am not. And even when my work goes well, I have no idea how I got there. Yeah, I guess it is luck. I always seem to have a breakthrough when I get these random adjustments, but then I have no idea how I can use what just happened from the adjustment without being handed the adjustment to get the breakthrough. So I leave feeling great about the breakthrough I just had from the adjustment but I always seem to have to wait for the adjustment just so I can have the breakthrough. I am literally addicted to adjustments!… to get the breakthrough to discover some kind of opening in which, at this point, I am not even sure has anything to do with the life of the actual text. It’s like I am always being directed rather than learning what the hell I am doing! And I want to know what the hell I am doing! I feel so damn stuck! And I am actually also a little angry that I am still in this position for this long. And worse, I feel absolutely lost! And so I am actually scared to do what I love doing! How the hell am I suppose to do this eight shows a week! What did I say ‘yes’ to? I am terrified!!!”

Before we hung up, we set up a meeting, and then I asked if it would be ok if I dedicated my next blog to this subject and share her story anonymously as I know all too well she is not alone in this predicament.

She agreed as long as I promised to help her “find her way out of the predicament”.

We laughed and I was honored to be brought onto her team.

Unfortunately this is not an isolated conversation.

I am disheartened as I am introduced to more and more actors revealing to me how distraught they are by not getting this “thing” that they seem to knowingly or unknowingly be looking for.

Despite reading numerous acting books, scrutinizing award-winning performances, participating in numerous workshops, and jumping from this studio to the next, there still seems to be something missing that is leaving the actor with a very large question mark about this “thing” they so inexplicably love.

So what’s missing?

Well…

I can tell you, without hesitation, what is missing.

Craft!

No matter what day and age we are in, though “styles” may have changed throughout the ages, the basis of all acting has not:

PLain and simple:

Life, circumstances, relationships, needs within those circumstances and relationships, obstacles to overcome in order to improve circumstances and relationships, and doing all we can that is in line with the text to achieve those needs with the hope of living in one way or another some kind of  peaceful, happy, successful, loving life as indicated by the givens of the text.
Basically what you would know in life, so would the character!

Because all that makes the unknown of the moment possible.

Without it, you are telling your own story and swimming in your own pool of who knows what.

We need tools that will help us physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually do the work.

Just as a ballet dancer needs to know all the technicalities to do a thousand faute turns, the actor also needs to have a set of tools supporting him or her to do the work.

If you want to live in the chaos of the unknown or moment, you have to be aware of what is known to do just that!

And of course, the perfect test of action is can you, the actor, do a play that is two and a half hours, eight shows a week, and still have a consistent, alive, uninhibited, organic and visceral performance as well as the vocal and physical stamina to do your job and tell the story truthfully using the full spectrum your instrument?

And let’s be honest, this is not just reserved for the theater.

Any actor that has the talent, sophistication, know-how, and ability to be dependable and accountable is an actor that has a long life in this business whether it be stage or screen.

I always say at nauseum to my students and clients:

“An actor that is always working…
is an actor that has always done the work!”

So here is my short answer to this unfortunate dilemma.

How do you live moment to moment in relation to the circumstances of the text?

Craft!

How do you live in the unknown of the moment?

Craft!

How do you use your listening in relationship to filter wants and needs that drive your character’s story forward?

Craft!

How do you emotionally live the arc of your character?

Craft!

How do you get to where the text indicates?

Craft!

How do you have a clear relationship with others including your environment and objects that still tell the story?

Craft!

How do you discover the physical or vocal attributes of your character?

Craft!

How do you make sense of your lines so they are not something you are just saying but they have an intention to improve your character’s circumstances moment to moment?

Craft!

How do you organically give birth to the lines you are saying?

Craft!

How do you viscerally understand what is happening between the lines?

Craft!

How do you completely bring your character to life using the accumulation of your life experiences as the instrument to the world of your character?

Craft!

How do you live in the chaos of the life of unknown?

Craft!

How do you do a two and a half hour show eight shows a week?

By being supported by craft!

If you are seeking answers to these issues and are still saying to yourself:

“I still do not know what the F*$# I am doing!”

It is time for you to take a stand and speak up for yourself because you deserve what you are seeking not only as an actor, but as an artist!

And quite frankly, as a consumer!

There is always something invauable to learn from everyone, but you have to be sure you are learning and can use what you are learning for your career as actor to be active and alive and truthful in the work in relationship to the story!

The fact of the matter is you have the right and obligation as an actor, as an artist, to have a set of tools, a craft, that will always have your back supporting you in any and all of your creative endeavors.

And there is not the way to get there!

But there is a way.

And that way is the way that resonates and stimulates with your instrument to do honest, truthful, exciting, sophisticated, and unpredictable work in relation to the circumstances at hand and that always allows for the quality of your work to be consistent and not dependent on luck!

It supports you in your knowing and therefore in your freedom within the unknown of the moment.

That is the craft that you want to cultivate.

That is the craft you want to continue to work with!

This is a craft that never fails you.

It always has your back.

That is the craft that you can always put to the test, refine, mix and match, while always knowing that you are supported and can find your way!

That is the craft that allows you to throw caution to the wind, dissolve fear, and fall back in love with the process of acting once again!

Even At Your “Worst”…Keep Creating!!!

IMG_9476

We all know that Life can throw us curve balls that knock us off track sometimes…

Sometimes those curve balls catch us of guard and we just have to laugh our asses off at the irony and say:

“Are you serious right now?!”…

And sometimes those curve balls knock the wind out of us and force us to crouch over with our hand up in the air saying:

“Ummm…Time out…Just give me a minute to catch my breath!”…

And then there are those other moments….

Oh, those other moments…

When those curve balls just come whaling at us…

Leaving us utterly speechless because there are no words to accompany such potentially shattering experiences…

And so we slowly make our way to the ground as the pregnant tears well up in our eyes…

Hoping the earth itself can somehow support such heaviness…

And we curl into that instinctual fetal position…

And listen to the buzz of the universal’s electro magnetic OM sound…

And hope that something comes along soon as the answer to rectify these really really crappy circumstances…

But wait?…

What if these crappy circumstances are the answer?…

What if within the complexity of these complex obstacles live the simplest of answers?…

What if all you are going through is the spark for something special?…

What if all you are going through is the food for your creative hunger?…

What if all you are going through is what inspires you to create something of profound substance?…

What if all you are going through is the fire you need to make the change you wish to see and experience?…

On a microcosmic level…

And yes…

Even on a macrocosmic level…

And then even on a bigger scale still…

What if all you are going through is guiding you towards your soul’s purpose?

What else would it be there for?

Really think about that?…

What is it all for?…

Just as punishment?…

Are you so bad, that Life just wants to treat you poorly and make you suffer?….

Are you really that bad?…

Is Life really that evil?…

I don’t think so…

I really really don’t think so…

We can leave that dark theory to someone else…

It is our experiences that feed us as artists…

We bring Light to all that darkness…

And it is all that darkness that forces us to the Light…

Artistcially speaking…

And yeah…

Spiritually speaking as well…

And the truth of the matter is that the more high stake our experiences are, the more we are usually inspired by them…

A banal everyday experience does not drive us to want to create…

It is what we have been through that is that driving creative force…

Everyday we have an opportunity to take those experiences and use them towards fulfilling our best artistic creative Life…

And as artists, we get to use those experiences towards fulfilling our creative dreams…

Only you truly have the power to realize every one of your own dreams…

You have to allow all you have been through to be the spark that keeps you creating…

We all come from and are made up of that magnificent creative Source…

Even at your “worst”, your creative energies are the exact medicine that actually will always keep you going….

It is your strength…

It is what allows for you to persevere…

And let’s be honest…

Don’t worry about everyone else’s take on things…

Your inner experience need not be understood by the others…

Let that go…

We cannot possibly expect the others to viscerally understand an experience that has never been tasted…

You may struggle hearing the most uninformed (I’m trying to be PC using the word ‘uninformed’) of things in response to your experience…

But you have to put it all into perspective…

It’s like asking a small child to solve an equation without ever taking a math class…

That child would look at you like your nuts and probably cover it with some crayola crayons…

Hmmm…

Still creative though…

That’s my kinda kid!…

Everything can only be understood by one’s accumulated Life knowledge up to that point in time…

But the experience is for you to grow, solve, expand, evolve, and share…

Yes, even at your “worst”…

Especially at your “worst”…

Keep going!

Suffer through if you must…

But never let adversity see you share a drop of fearful sweat…

Wipe your brow…

Take a breath…

Look at it in ‘its’ face…

Smile like a professional…

And say:

“Game on biatch!”

And then fight, wrestle, kick and scream with that ‘it’ if you must…

But never stop using that fire to continue creating…

Do it FOR YOU…

The power is in your hands…

In your mind…

And in your heart…

If you use what Life has given you, Life will have your back!

Now go make your creative mark!

Actors: Bringing The Light To The Darkness…

Transcipt Of Video:

“It asks of us to look in our own being…

And see how we can become congruent with those given circumstances…

To reveal truth to those given circumstances…

And the way that I really encourage actors to go to that place…

Is reminding them…

That there is light in that place…

By us revealing that dark side of the human condition…

We’re actually serving humanity…

To show these are areas of the human condition that we still need to evolve in…

And ‘I’m’ (the actor) going to be the instrument that actually brings that to light…

So we can have awareness of that…

And hopefully see a transformation in that side of the human condition…

And so it becomes a pillar of service…

And that’s really what artistry is after all…

It’s service for the human condition…

For human kind…”

F#$% You Fear…

Transcipt Of Video:
“Hey guys, in two months I am going to be 41 years old and it is going to be my 17th year teaching acting…

(So ummm 18 years‍♂️Luckily I did not become a math teacher!)

I started teaching when I was 23 years old…

I probably had no business teaching at that point…

But I did…

And I committed my life to helping actors formulate a craft that stimulates their instrument…

To to do unpredictable…

And exciting…

And truthful work..

In relationship to the circumstances…

While also maintaining the joy of the art form that your heart loves doing…

And the one thing that I found in 17 years…

(There’s the math again ‍♂️)

That always gets in the way of all that…

Is fear!

Because that fear is responsible for ripping the joy out of our work…

And our creative process…

Which in turn is going to really affect the joy in our lives…

So what I’m trying to get people to do…

Is start looking at that fear in the eye…

And do yourself a favor…

And take back your power…

By looking at the structures that that fear has put up…

And held you in bondage…

And dismantle them by doing the internal work that says…

F#$% YOU !

I’m not dealing with this anymore…

I’m coming back into who I AM!

Your Worth As An Artist…

Transcript Of Video:

“It is never going to be enough…

As long as you continue to allow the external world to be the determining factor of what validates you as an artist…

You are always going to feel that sense of lack…

You are always going to have the hole in your heart that is desperately searching for something out there to give you a sense of Self that says…

‘Yes! You should be doing what you are doing!.'”

Now I am not saying that applause and success and jobs and awards are not worthy of being celebrated…

Because they are…

They are lovely…

But they are fleeting…

You have to know in your heart your worth…

You have to know that what you are doing…

What your are saying…

What you are revealing…

Is worthy of being witnessed.

You have to know that your talents alone are validation enough for you to be pursuing the journey that you are pursuing…

But that has go to come from the Self.”

The Actor’s Job In The Audition…

Transcript Of Video:

“I totally hear what you are saying…

But I encourage you to start shifting the dynamic in which you are going into the room…

Because it sounds like right now you are going into the room with this bulldozer approach of trying to snatch up that role…

And the problem with that is that is where your attention lies…

In the ‘getting’ of that role.

But that is not your job in that moment…

That is casting’s job…

To figure out who is going to play what…

It is your job to go into that room and reveal the life of that role…

To fulfill the demands of the character that the sides are asking you to fulfill…

And to go in there and do that in an unpredictable, exciting, authentic, honest, truthful way…

To leave yourself on the walls that shows this what you do as the actor…

This is what you do as an artist…

And trust that that is more than enough to fulfill the demands of that audition…

And leave with your head held high!”
